Formal dance and drama examinations, including GCSEs, are made available to NLPAC students and the pass rates are exemplary. The same is true of the graded music exams. However, anybody who wishes to take up the performing arts, at whatever level, is encouraged to simply have fun.
NLPAC certainly offers performance opportunities for children at all levels. The Centre is very proud of its successful Dance Troupes who have performed everywhere from Sadler’s Wells Theatre to Buckingham Palace and there have been annual show cases at places such as the Old Vic, Alexandra Palace and the BBC Hippodrome. The drama department showcases three plays at Jackson’s Lane Theatre every year for each age group: Older students have regularly performed musical productions at the Edinburgh Festival.
NLPAC has an outreach programme that has gone to over 50 schools which, three years ago, broke two world records including the largest simultaneous song and dance routine with over 10,000 students taking part. NLPAC is also affiliated with Collage Arts and through this partnership it has been able to offer over 500 young people, aged 13 – 18 years, the opportunity to actively take part in fully funded performance art workshops. This has proven to be a huge success and the performances at the end of the course were evident of this, the young people involved have gained new skills, confidence and friends.
NLPAC also gives children the opportunity to perform professionally. Students have appeared in West End theatre productions such as Les Miserables and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; many TV shows such as EastEnders, The Bill and Murphy’s Law, numerous adverts and films, (Billy Elliot [all the ballerinas], Bridget Jones, The Exorcist, Harry Potter amongst many others). Many of NLPAC’s ex students are now familiar faces, regularly popping up on TV, stage and in major films.
NLPAC has provided links and support for many other organisations such as the Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute (providing adult educational classes); Finchley Children’s Music Group, Colourstrings (music method tuition group for children); K.S.Pilates and Haringey Autism. NLPAC is run as a nonprofit making organisation, which provides affordable arts provision.
